Texas’s 2020 state report lists 225 Muslim congregations and 313,209 estimated adherents, an adherence rate of 10.75 per 1,000 residents. The source is the U.S. Religion Census as presented by ARDA, not the federal population census and not a 2026 count. Placing Texas beside selected states in the same reporting framework is more useful than comparing whichever headline estimate happens to be largest. [1]

Size is not the same as share

The number of people and the share of a population answer different questions. In this selection, Texas has a larger estimated count than Maryland, while Maryland has a higher reported adherence rate. That comparison follows directly from the two columns; it does not establish that one community is more active, more influential or better served. [1] [2]

The same caution applies to congregations. A count of worship communities cannot substitute for a count of schools, clinics, community organizations or museum collections. Those institutions are part of a different picture, developed in the Texas Muslim Atlas.

Why estimates from different publications disagree

A religious affiliation survey asks a different question from a congregational membership project. A directory counts its own listed locations. An estimate quoted in a public document may draw from still another source. Before treating two totals as contradictory, compare their dates, definitions and geography. The Texas Muslim statistics ledger keeps those categories separate. [3]

This table deliberately stays within one source and one reference year. It does not estimate the present population, extrapolate to 2026, or rank all states. For readers who need local detail, the selected county table applies the same reporting framework below the state level.
