Funding and ownership
Who pays for this, and who owns it. Both answers are currently the same person, and that is worth stating plainly rather than burying.
Ownership
Texas Muslim was founded by Omar Afra, a Houston-based publisher and cultural entrepreneur, and is owned by him. He serves as editor.
Funding
The publication was initially financed by Omar Afra personally. It has no grant funding, no institutional backer, no advertising and no subscription revenue at this time. If that changes, this page changes with it, with the date of the change.
We do not claim nonprofit status. Texas Muslim is not a registered charity, not an accredited institution, and has no connection to the government of Texas or any of its agencies.
Affiliated publications
Omar Afra also publishes Testset and Live Index, and founded Free Press Houston. Those are affiliated publications under common ownership. When we link to them, we label them as ours. They are not independent corroboration of anything we report, and we do not cite them as though they were.
Conflicts of interest
Where a story touches a business, organisation or person connected to the owner, the connection is disclosed in the story itself, not only here. Coverage of the owner's own ventures is labelled as such.
On independence
A one-person-funded publication cannot claim the structural independence of a newsroom with a board and diversified revenue. What it can do is show its sources, mark its review status, and correct itself in public. That is what we are doing; see editorial standards.
