Omar Afra

Omar Afra is a Houston-based publisher, festival producer and cultural entrepreneur, and the founder and editor of Texas Muslim. His work spans independent journalism, live music, cultural archives and public-source research. He founded Free Press Houston, co-founded Free Press Summer Fest and Day for Night, and publishes Testset and Live Index. Texas Muslim brings that editorial background to questions of faith, belonging and Muslim civic life in Texas.

Why Texas Muslim

Born in Beirut and raised in the United States, Afra describes being Muslim and being Texan as parts of the same life rather than identities in conflict. His welcome essay, “As-salamu alaykum, Y’all.” begins with that ordinary Houston reality: a longtime barber, a neighborhood halal market, and friendships that do not fit neatly into cultural categories. The publication grows out of his interest in making that everyday life visible alongside the public arguments surrounding it.

As founder and editor, he directs Texas Muslim’s coverage of Islamophobia, claims about Sharia, religious literacy and the institutions through which Muslim Texans live and organize. The site combines sourced explainers, a glossary, opinion, outside-news links and practical directories. Its purpose is to examine alarming claims without mistaking alarm for evidence, while giving readers useful information about the communities being discussed. Editorial standards and the Opinion section explain the distinction between reporting, evidence and argument.

Independent publishing and the Houston record

Afra founded Free Press Houston in 2003. The newspaper covered local music, arts, politics and civic culture, and provided a platform for a broad community of writers, photographers, artists and designers. Its publishing history belongs to that wider group, not to one byline. His contributor record at the Free Press Houston Archive places his own writing and editorial role within the surviving publication and event records.

He now helps steward that archive as an editor, preserving and contextualizing material from Free Press Houston and its associated cultural projects. The work connects contemporary research to original articles, print editions, flyers, interviews and other documents. It also keeps historical authorship and present-day archival commentary distinct, so readers can tell an original source from a later explanation of it.

Festivals and cultural production

The publishing work developed alongside large-scale live events. Afra co-founded Free Press Summer Fest in 2009 and Day for Night in 2015, bringing together music, audiences and, in Day for Night’s case, visual art and installations. His work continued after Free Press Houston ended its original publishing run in 2018. Afra established Testset in 2020 as an independent publication covering culture, technology, politics and the business of live music. His Texas Islamophobia and Sharia Panic dossier brings together his commentary on Muslim civic life and the rhetoric surrounding it. Texas Muslim develops related subjects in its own reference-oriented format, while clearly identifying Testset material as work from an affiliated publication.

At Live Index, he examines the economics and infrastructure of live music: ticket pricing, touring, festivals, venues, affordability and market structure. The Live Index author profile connects that research to his experience in event production and publishing. Across these projects, his stated editorial approach is to make the sources, definitions and limits of an argument available to the reader rather than asking a reputation or a headline to do all the work.
