What Texas Muslim is
Texas Muslim covers Islam and Muslim life in Texas through research, plain-language explainers, journalism and cultural resources — written for general readers and for journalists who need something they can check.
Who publishes it
Texas Muslim was founded by Omar Afra, a Houston-based publisher and cultural entrepreneur. He is its founder and editor, and also publishes Testset and Live Index. He founded Free Press Houston.

This is not a religious authority or a substitute for scholarship. It is a Texas-based publishing project: a place to call out the recycled lies told about Islam, push back on the easy spread of Islamophobia, and make room for the ordinary truth of Muslim life here. When questions of theology or law arise, the relevant page points readers to named scholars and primary sources.
What we publish
Reference material that stays useful: definitions built from primary sources, explainers of belief and practice, evidence records for claims that circulate in Texas public argument, and coverage of Muslim cultural life in the state — including a growing directory of halal Texas barbecue.
We index outside coverage rather than republish it. Articles by other outlets link to their own publishers and get no page here.
How we work
Every public page names its sources, its review status and its scope. Where evidence is thin or contested, the page says so rather than rounding to a clean answer. The detail is in editorial standards and methodology.
Funding and ownership are disclosed in funding. Mistakes are handled in the open at corrections.
Where the publication is right now
This is an early build. A small number of pieces are published; several sections are deliberately empty, marked as such, and kept out of search until they hold verified work. Empty is honest. Filler is not.
