FAFSA or TASFA? A starting guide for Texas families
Choose the appropriate financial-aid application, keep academic years straight and confirm requirements with the college.

A community scholarship search should sit alongside the college’s financial-aid process. Start by asking which application applies to the student, which academic year is being funded and what the institution still needs. Muslim identity does not determine that choice. A family’s citizenship, residency, enrollment and institution-specific circumstances require their own review; a directory cannot decide eligibility from someone’s religion or surname.
Two applications with different purposes
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board directs students to check FAFSA eligibility first. FAFSA supports consideration for federal, state and institutional aid. Students who do not complete FAFSA may use TASFA for state-aid consideration, subject to Texas residency and other requirements. Do not complete TASFA after FAFSA to obtain extra aid. The Board recommends confirming the appropriate route with the intended college. Its page lists 2026–27 and 2027–28 applications; select the year that matches attendance. [1]
Track priority, institutional and final dates separately
THECB says many institutions use January 15 as a state priority date. Priority consideration is not a funding guarantee or necessarily the final cutoff, and institutional deadlines vary. Apply early, then confirm the required supporting materials and the college’s own dates. [1] A scholarship sponsor’s deadline belongs in a separate column: winning a private award does not complete the college’s aid application.
Questions to take to the financial-aid office
Ask: Which application should I use for this academic year? Has it reached this campus? What remains on my document checklist? Which priority dates apply to my entry term and student classification? Where should sensitive records be uploaded? Record the answer, office and date rather than relying on a forwarded message from another family. If information conflicts, send the office the exact source and ask it to resolve that particular question.
Use the Scholarship Hub for provider-specific awards and the outside-scholarship guide before treating an award as a dollar-for-dollar reduction in your bill. For campus life, the existing campus directory links to institutional and Muslim student resources.
