Scholarships for Muslim students in law, media, film and public policy

Compare academic stage, supported fields and community requirements before choosing an application.

A scholarship search in these fields begins with the exact degree and the student’s stage of study. A first-year undergraduate, a senior applying to law school and a doctoral student should not start with the same shortlist merely because all three describe an interest in public service. The nationwide scholarship directory keeps those distinctions beside each award. Use the provider’s current criteria as the deciding document, then organize the preparation around the application that actually fits.

Four ISF pathways

The Islamic Scholarship Fund maintains separate policy, law, media and film programs. Policy, media and film criteria identify junior, senior or graduate standing; law identifies undergraduate seniors and incoming 1L, 2L or 3L students. Supported fields and the full-time-study or employment-plus-part-time-study conditions matter. The law page emphasizes access to justice, while the other pages specify Muslim-community involvement or Muslim identity/community participation. [1–4]

All four current pages announce a December 2026 opening for 2027 applications. An exact opening day and dated submission cutoff are not yet established by that announcement; use the new application for those details. All four list a 3.0 GPA minimum and citizenship, permanent residency or DACA in their eligibility bullets. Law, media and film FAQs omit DACA from a narrower summary. Record that discrepancy and ask the provider which wording controls. [1–4]

A field match needs more than a keyword

Compare the actual program or concentration with the provider’s supported-major list. ISF policy includes specified public-service fields and limited doctoral disciplines; its FAQ excludes several policy-related specialties. A degree title containing “policy” is therefore insufficient on its own. [1] For an ambiguous program, send the provider its official name, concentration and enrollment classification. Ask a focused eligibility question before building an extensive portfolio.

A separate Arab-heritage media award, the Jack Shaheen scholarship, should be evaluated on its own heritage, citizenship, GPA and degree rules. Muslim identity alone does not establish its heritage requirement. Likewise, the ISNA Arfa and Faroque Khan fund names law, media and journalism but shares ISNA’s current incoming-freshman wording; do not silently treat it as a law-school award.

Plan around the actual submission

Use the provider’s current checklist for transcripts, recommendations, video introductions, essays and work samples. ISF lists those materials on its program pages. [1–4] Keep each file’s current version and the recommender’s submission status with the application record. A professional portfolio should show the applicant’s contribution accurately; identify team roles instead of implying sole authorship.

The directory’s local planner can organize deadlines and questions, but submissions belong on the provider’s platform. If selected, save the award terms, confirm payment timing and report outside aid to the college. The outside-scholarship guide explains why the face value of an award and its effect on the aid package are separate questions.
